Third Quarter 2017

Tennis Soles for Others Set

Our ongoing service project, Tennis Soles for Others, continues to grow in momentum as we add new shoe bins and beneficiaries. These gently used shoes have given joy to others. This last quarter we delivered shoes to Amor ministries in Tijuana, Friendship Shelter in Laguna Beach, OC Rescue Mission and to Laguna Niguel Presbyterian who then delivers to Siempre Para Los Ninos. Thank you to volunteer, Shawn Morningstar, for delivering with Carol Walsh to the OC Rescue Mission. TSO needs help! We are looking for two members to help deliver shoes when the time arises. Two deliveries per year would help us out a lot. If you can help deliver, please email [email protected] In June, we have a member traveling to Africa who will take children’s shoes to an orphanage. If you have younger children and can spare a few old shoes, please donate in one of our shoe bins located at: LNRC, RCI, Lifetime RSC, Nellie Gail, Mission Viejo, Tustin Hills,
Coto de Caza and Dana Hills Tennis Center.

We are all working toward our May 20th event to benefit Wings For Crossover. Above are photos provided by their school, the Crossover Academy. Don’t miss our General membership meeting on June 8th at 11:00 a.m. where we will be presenting Wings for Crossover the proceeds raised from our Wimbledon Grand Slam Tennis Charity event. Look for an Evite soon with all of the details

Happy Spring! What an amazing group of women we have at TSO! While we are all focused on getting ready for our first fabulous Wimbledon Grand Slam Tournament on May 20th, we continue to serve others in so many different ways. In February, our VP of Fundraising, Jill Behrle, organized a live ball event where proceeds went to GreenDog Foundation from San Juan Capistrano. GD provides animals a second chance for life by providing care, medical services and the opportunity for an animal to have a loving and permanent home. TSO also answered the call for need with
two special service projects last quarter. With your help, we collected jackets and blankets that were donated to Amor Ministries, and a big thanks to Carol’s sister-inlaw, Cris Syrios, for starting a
collection at her studios in San Diego on behalf of Tennis Serves Others. All of these jackets and blankets were delivered by Jill Tupper, who spoke at our March membership meeting, and they will be distributed to needy families in Tijuana.

VP of Membership Set Kelly Altuzarra

We are growing!!! TSO added nine NEW members in March, six of whom are in the LA area. Our general membership now totals 90!!! Please tell your friends, teammates and opponents about
TSO. Many hands working together are better than just a few.

Visit us on our website and like us on Facebook!

Animals like to play with tennis as much as we do! In March, TSO collected and donated used tennis balls to OC Animal Care, Irvine Animal Care, and San Clemente Animal Shelter.
Please reach out any time with beneficiaries you think would benefit from our efforts, TSO applications for our Grand 2018 Tournament open on June 1, 2017.

Secretary’s Set Terry Campbell

I am thrilled to be a part of such a meaningful non-profit like TSO. I’m amazed by so many of you doing so much to make the May event a swinging success. I have heard multiple examples of members going above and beyond to ensure we hit our goal for Wings For Crossover. Whether its the decorations committee of 12 enthusiastic creative minds working together to create the perfect Wimbledon ambiance, or individuals channeling their inner saleswomen to solicit donation after donation…the LOVE ALL philosophy surrounds us all and inspires us all. Thank you for your dedication and contributions – large or small, every one is valuable

President’s Set Dorene Spearman

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Tennis Serves Others’ event of the year…Wimbledon Grand Slam Tournament benefitting Wings For Crossover. The success of this event is due in large part to our TSO members. If you have not had the opportunity to get involved IT’S NOT TOO LATE! We still need additional silent auction items and sponsors. And we need you to SIGN UP!

Many organizations earmark a designated amount of money every year for charity, so let’s reach out to them! Extending an invitation to the businesses you frequent or have unique connections with is easy and gives them an opportunity to support a worthy cause. Sponsorship levels range from $100 – $1000 and all sponsors will be acknowledged at the event. Contact [email protected] for in–kind donations and sponsorship letters. And, last, we need you to SIGN up! You can register on-line at or you can sign up at the
LNRC front desk. TSO has an envelope where you can leave a check. Tickets cost $75 pp. If you can’t play, please still come to enjoy the atmosphere, eat and shop the great auction items. Lunch tickets are only $25. This is a good ticket to bring your spouse, family member or friend. Thank you in advance for your efforts!

Message From the Founder

Dear TSO Members, Our 1st Annual Gala & Tournament, TSO Wimbledon Grand Slam, is around the corner! On Saturday, May 20th, the LNRC clubhouse will be transformed. This will be a FUN & LIVELY event and it will be successful because of YOU! I’m so impressed with the teamwork everyone has shown-getting the word out to your friends and teammates, working on decorations, soliciting sponsorships and auction items, taking the day to play, etc. You will be making a difference in a child’s life through your participation. I’m so excited to help the children of Crossover Academy and to be a part of this amazing TSO Team! I love how we will use our tennis to help serve these orphans who need sustainable food and sleeping arrangements. A big thanks to our Committee Chairs leading our way: Dorene Spearman – Sponsorship; Jill Behrle – Decorations; Marcia Patterson – Registration; Stacy Gavin & Terry Campbell – Volunteer Mgmt & Food Coordination; and Jill Hauk – Auction. To learn more about Wings For Crossover click here and see how you personally are making an impact in the lives of underprivileged children:

In January, the TSO Board of Directors adopted new chapter bylaws which will be applied at all locations including Orange County. Each Chapter will consist of honorary members whom vote on Board positions and upcoming beneficiaries relevant to the area and tennis club. Board positions will serve for one year, except President which is a two-year commitment. If you have a dynamic benevolent friend in another city who might be interested in starting a TSO Chapter, please give her my contact information.

Big News in Los Angeles…TSO opened a NEW chapter! Thank you Adeline! Adeline Arjad Cook is the new President of our Los Angeles Chapter, and is working to build her board and team. She is doing an amazing job inspiring ladies to join TSO to help expand this new community of tennis ladies serving others. Welcome all LA TSO members! We hope you can attend our inaugural Wimbledon Grand Slam
Tournament on May 20th!

Love All,
Carol Walsh
